  • Monty's Choices

The five candidates for the three captain’s picks for the European Ryder Cup team had cases that were so close to being equal that Colin Montgomerie could just as well have thrown darts to determine his selections. No matter which trio he picked, he couldn’t really lose—he would have been getting three very good players in any case. But he also couldn’t really win—he was guaranteed to leave off two players who had strong arguments for making the team. There were so many factors involved that it almost had to come down to a gut feeling. Yet if you look ...

  • Foggy Straits

I, for one, was not surprised that the PGA Championship was delayed more than three hours by fog on Thursday. I once played a round in such heavy fog at Whistling Straits that you could not see more than 50 yards ahead of you. And it lasted the entire round. That's right, we did not see a single full shot land all day. The only way we were able to play was having caddies who could tell us where to aim and help us find the ball. Pavin said afterwards that during the exchange, Gray's eyes looked strange. Frankly, I think that Gray's reporting and behavior this week have both been pretty strange. ...

  • Fuzzy course evaluations and a too-clear replay

If you want to know how tough a PGA Tour course is going to play, don’t ask the players. That point was driven home at the Valero Texas Open, played at the new TPC San Antonio. The new complex has two courses, with the tournament being played on the AT&T Oaks Course. Based on the pre-tournament buildup, you would have thought a more appropriate name for the course would be The Monster. All we heard leading into the tournament was how severe the course was, how long it was, how extreme the greens were. It sounded like they were going to be ...
