  • Vail: The Best Made Simple

Because I write about travel – especially ski travel - for a living, people constantly ask me for vacation advice. I love to help, but it takes time, so sometimes I cheat. When they ask, “What’s the best place to go skiing?” I usually just say “Vail.” Vail is the straight-A student of ski resorts. With the possible exception of its excellent ski school, it’s not the very best at any one subject, be it food, lodging, or expert terrain, but across the board, Vail is very good at everything. • Is Golf a Real Sport? Check Out my Pro-Golf Editorial in the Current issue of Outside Magazine

I golf, I cycle, I run, I hike, I ski, I do a lot of things. In this regards, I am unusual. Most of the people I know who I consider “outdoorsy,” including my ski and bike partners, look down their noses at my beloved golf. They are wrong in this regards, and sometimes even stupid. Then it was Camilo Villegas, whose certainly got game, definitely has style and still has time, but doesn’t have much in the way of winning hardware. Most recently was Anthony Kim, who missed the cut this weekend and continues to play blissfully Major- free. In between were many others, all come and ...

  • Eat, Drink, Golf

If I get one more press release from a hotel offering an Eat, Pray, Love package, I am going to shoot myself. I have nothing against Elizabeth Gilbert’s bestseller of the same name – my wife read it and liked it. In fact, I have some helpful advice for Gilbert: if these big name hotels are actively selling packages, and presumably making a profit, by invoking the name of your (copyrighted) book, shouldn’t you get a cut of the action? Something to ask your lawyer about. Then maybe I won’t get any more releases. The book, I think, is about a woman ...
